A great Hope fell
2021
Acrylic on Unprimed Linen
300x240mm
This is just one from an ongoing series of paintings based on the manuscript fragments of American poet Emily Dickinson. Fifty-two of these manuscripts were collected in the book These Gorgeous Nothings (2013) in which these scraps of envelope and wrapping paper were reproduced full size.
The size of the painting corresponds the book page, and the painting reproduces the paper of Dickinson’s manuscript as closely as possible, albeit without her transformative pencil script. The first line of the poem written upon the paper gives the painting its title.
