Monument to Entropy (Passaic)

Colour photographs

This work emerged from walk that replicated that made by the artist Robert Smithson around his old home-town of Passaic, which he wrote about in 'A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey' (1967). During my own walk, my camera stopped working, and upon returning to London I took it to be fixed. It was when I then had the film developed that had been in the camera that I discovered, amongst the photographs replicating Smithson's own, a number of rather haunted double-exposures, in which different times and places had come together rather differently.
