Monument to Entropy (Library)

Numerous second-hand books; display shelves

While looking through an inventory of the books the artist Robert Smithson owned at the time of his premature death in 1973, I noticed that I owned a number of the same books, right down to the specific edition. Library is an attempt to collect duplicate copies of all the books owned by Smithson at the time of his death (they have to be from the same edition, and not modern reprints), a process by which the dispersed elements are brought together in order to recreate the ‘culture’ in which the artist operated, albeit knowing full well that while such an activity might cast light on some aspects of his practice, other aspects would retreat into the shadows.
