Vintage French laundry tape, suspended
286 x 0.9cm

This work is one of a number in which something becomes meaningful when given due attention; this is less an act of transformation, however, than a revelation of that which is already there, the 'propensity of things', to borrow a phrase from the French sinologist François Jullien.

Here a length of vintage French laundry tape — actually made for export in the artist's birth city of Coventry — suggests how best it might be displayed, and how simply, too: the number upon the tape giving the height of its vertical display, with one end just touching the gallery floor.

Photograph shows installation at Chandelier, London.
